Prairie

Prairie

One of the most important reasons for using native prairie plants in the landscape is to increase public awareness about saving native organisms and their habitats. Our half-acre Missouri prairie was planted by students from Brittany Woods Middle School with the support of the Missouri Prairie Foundation and Washington University in the late 1990s. The prairie is similar to the prairies that used to cover a vast expanse of the Midwest. You can get first-hand knowledge of the native plants and animals that thrive here, and learn which plants attract butterflies and birds.

This healthy prairie ecosystem is maintained through a system of mowing and occasional controlled burns. By walking to the middle of the Prairie, visitors may experience a sense of the vastness of America's grasslands in miniature, as many of the plants in the Green Center's Prairie will grow higher than visitors' heads!

The Green Center is actively involved in preserving the prairie. The prairie is open to the public and located at 8125 Groby Road in University City.
