A member of the moist prairie community, Prairie Dock is a unique towering plant with flowering stalks that arise from a large cluster of broad basal leaves. The sunflower-like blooms last for a month or longer in mid-to-late summer. Once they’ve become established the plants are drought tolerant and long-lived. Individual plants can flourish for decades. The large size and deep taproot make the plant difficult to move, so choose the site carefully in a garden setting. Birds love the seeds.
