Artist's Statement

Leaf Bugs
Leaf Bugs is a collection of painted and collaged artworks, depicting insects and arthropods, each based on a leaf or flower I collected and pressed.
Each creature begins with a walk outside, usually in autumn, collecting leaves (and some summertime flowers from my garden). I put them in a book, forget about them for a few weeks, and when the leaf is dry, I glue it to a page and look. I look for details that remind me of the forms, colors, and patterns of insects or arthropods, and that is what I paint. I reference field guides, centuries-old etched plates and illustrations, photographs, and real specimens to create each artwork.
These bugs are both real and imagined. A yellow maple leaf with several black disease spots perfectly matches the dots of a ladybug or an orange spotted fruit chafer beetle. The midrib of a willow leaf reminds me of a dragonfly’s abdomen, and the helicopter seeds of a maple tree remind me of their wings. I imagine the rest of the dragonfly myself, without a specific species in mind.
I love to look at bugs. I love the delicate details of spiders and the glow of a scorpion under UV light. I love leaves and flowers, and this collection of works is my love letter to biomimicry and the infinite creativity of all the bugs and plants in our world. They are worth observing, and each detail is worth saving.
