The Prairie Speaks

I am like a big, big city
full of life at rush hour –
underground, moles digging,
constructing tunnels,
above, rabbits digging ditches,
ladybugs rushing home,
plants bumping,
spraying seeds,
and sparkling flowers
and blazing stars
dancing like everyday
it’s Mardi Gras.
Show Me Science & Arts Summer Experience (SASE)
5 day sessions for youth agencies & schools, offered by The Green Center and Missouri Dept of Natural Resources
The Show Me SASE camp connects children to nature near where they live. During this five-day camp, children explore the outdoor classrooms at The Green Center, Calvary Cemetery, Melvin Price Locks & Dam, and Missouri State Parks. The students also have the opportunity to take part in nature-related service learning projects back at their site. Professional artists will share their craft with the students and weave artistic creativity into their study of the natural world. Please contact The Green Center if your youth agency would like to participate in one of these camps planned for June and July in 2008.
For more information contact us at 314-725-8314 or classes@thegreencenter.org.
The program is funded by our partners, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Memco Barge Line.

Camp Current River Project

On August 23rd, 2007, The Green Center learned that its Camp Current River program was selected by Secretary of Interior Dirk Kempthorne as a Certified Eligible Project under the National Park Service’s Centennial Initiative. This summer youth camp will enable students in underserved districts to engage in environmental and conservation studies at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in south-central Missouri. Approximately 30 children per week will learn first-hand about the unique ecosystem, distinctive watershed and extraordinary geological traits characteristic of the region.

The headquarters for Camp Current River is a former fishing lodge located on the banks of the Upper Current River in Shannon County, Missouri. The lodge is currently undergoing extensive renovation in an effort to obtain LEED certification.

Selection by the Centennial Initiative committee will enable The Green Center to receive a dollar-for-dollar matching fund contribution from the federal government. If you would like to join us in realizing our funding goal, or for more information about the project, please contact The Green Center at (314) 725-8314.

Camp Current River represents an ideal natural classroom through which to reconnect our children with the great outdoors and the wonderful treasure that is the Ozark National Scenic Riverways!
